Amazon.com Product Description
Get a boost up steep hills with the Izip Trailz AL electric comfort bike for men, which allows you to ride as you would with any other in-city bike but also provides a battery-powered motor for an assist when you need it. With the TAG/PAS technology (Twist and Go or Pedal Assist), you can use the bike with motor only or with motor assist power. The bike rack has an SLA (sealed lead acid) battery mounted to it, which enables you to swap it out for an optional secondary battery. The rack also provides an easy way to carry gear or groceries using an optional pannier system.

The removable SLA rechargeable battery (above) and easy-to-operate handlebar controller.
The battery offers a range of 15 to 20 miles per charge, so you can make it back and forth to the grocery store several times without running low on power. And once you're on the road, the Trailz boasts a top speed of 15 miles per hour (depending on rider weight)--plenty fast enough for most bike-friendly city streets.

5 out of 5 stars wow! great electric bike for low cost   January 16, 2010

my brothers bought this for our dad who is nearing 70. he used to love biking but at his age, he couldn't go like he used to. he's been shopping for months for one and was curious but never pulled the trigger to buy one. so we bought this one for Christmas.

we got the female version because at his age, the female version is easier to get on and off since it has no center bar to climb over like on a male bike. it's an awesome bike! our version was the red model and it looks great. just like a normal mountain bike but with an electric motor attached. there is a front disc brake rather than standard caliper brakes! the rear brakes are standard caliper brakes. the rear bike rack can hold up to 2 electric batteries simultaneously for very long range. the bike comes with one bike battery. the battery can be easily removed and there is a locking mechanism so there's less worry about theft. personally, if the bike was for commuting purposes, I'd detach the battery and take it into the office. it has a carry handle like a suitcase. these batteries are expensive so you don't want to worry about someone jacking this bike.

it has shocks on the front. the seat is comfortable, rivaling the Cloud9 gel seat I have for my own bike (but not quite as good as the Cloud9 stuff). the seat has a small shock absorber itself. when you sit on it, it presses down. there is one gear shift for the rear derailleur (7 gears). there is no gear shift for the front derailleur since there's only one gear.

the tires come with slime already installed inside the tires so risk of flats is much smaller. on my own bike, I used the Slime liner for the tires rather than the gel. this bike uses the standard Slime gel that you put inside the tubing. I prefer the liners myself so I had the liners installed on the Izip bike so the bike has dual protection (Slime gel inside the tubing and a separate liner outside the tubing). the last thing you want a 67 year old to have is a flat and their reflexes can't handle a sudden flat.

the electric motor is great. all you have to do is rotate part of the grip toward your body and it takes off. you can either start with zero pedaling and use the electric only or you can start pedaling and then engage the electric. you can go completely electric or completely pedaling or a combination. it really is easy. before we got the bike, we worried about the lurching effect of electric vehicles when you first engage the electric, but this bike is very easy to control and feels quite safe.

my dad loves this bike and I must admit I had fun (though I'll never give up my Cannondale) with it too. we had the local bike shop assemble and tune it but if you know anything about bikes, I'm sure you could assemble it. The bike ships mostly assembled so it's not a major job but I like having a bike fully tuned and ready to go so it was worth having the shop assemble it.

now for the concerns. they're not quite negatives but things to keep in mind. my own bike is a Cannondale mountain bike. i love it. it's super light. great for offroading. so I was used to great brakes that can stop you on a dime. it was an expensive bike so you can tell differences quite easily. These brakes on the Izip are not nearly the same quality. you really have to pull them. I brought the bike back to the store to have them tightened up. Keep in mind that the bike was brand new and I hadn't broken in the cabling yet so I hope the braking improves with time as the tension adjusts to usage. the next thing is this bike is heavy. really heavy. maybe this weight was the reason braking was harder on this bike versus my Cannondale. you don't notice the weight while riding if you're in any kind of decent shape. even if you only pedal and don't use the electric motor at all, you don't really notice the weight. the bike felt heavy like the cheap bikes you find at Walmart. and the weight of the battery didn't help.

you only notice the weight when you try to lift the bike like loading it into a SUV or minivan. I had no problem but I worry for my 67 year old dad. I can't imagine him lifting this bike on any regular basis such as loading up on a city bus rack or loading up on a tow bar bike rack.

lastly, charging the bike is easy. just plug in the charger to the battery and then to a standard outlet. the confusion becomes the instructions say to charge it for 6-8 hours. but the light indicator on the charger glows green after only a couple hours so do you trust the indicator or do you trust the instructions? so at this point, we're following the instructions rather than the light indicator on the charger. the instructions say you can't overcharge the battery but yet also says that it's not recommended to have the battery plugged in for more than 24 hours.

I absolutely recommend this bike. If you feel adventurous, when the standard battery dies, there are battery alternatives that are lighter with longer range. If you get a lithium ion battery, you seriously shave off some pounds and the range can double. But of course, these newer technology batteries are more expensive than the battery than comes standard. we're already thinking of getting a newer technology battery when this one goes kaput. I don't think having two batteries simultaneously is necessary because the speed and range is great. We don't need our dad barreling down the street on a bike any faster than necessary.

keep in mind that you don't want to be riding this bike in the rain or any wet condition. the instructions say in multiple places to avoid water. it is an electric motor after all. and don't worry about getting stranded without electric power should you run out of battery charge. you still have your legs to pedal home!

5 out of 5 stars some imperfections, but currently the best on the market   March 3, 2010

I own both a mens and womens Izip. Both are good bikes. The womens looks better and is easier to ride, but the mens is easier to lock up and hold when stationary.

The Izips look very nice - I often hear people comment that the bike looks more expensive than it really is. The bike comes wrapped in cheezy-looking stickers, but once you rip them off the end result is very impressive visually.

The handlebar grips are cheezy and will fall off - it's best to get a set of replacement grips (I recommend Ergon GP1 gripshift grips).

The seat is a bit hard - you might want to get a gel slip-over cover for the seat.

These are a lot more fun if you buy a second battery pack - that way one can charge one while you use the other.

The range on flat ground is about fifteen miles, but the range on hills is only three miles or so. This bike can go up very steep hills, but doing so kills the battery quickly.

Some parts of the bike look like they're cheap and will wear out quickly, but overall it's a really good deal. Unlike more expensive electric bikes, this one has a "throttle" mode - the others only do pedal assist. In other words, you can ride the Izip like a bike, or like a motorcycle. The other electric bikes only have a "bike" mode, even though they cost five times as much.

For lights, I use the Foxfire 5-light headlight, and the Cateye TL-LD170 rear light. They work well and match the style of the bike.
